While diwali is just round the
corner, I am sure most of you are already at the peak of MISSION “Ghar Ki
Safai”. Come diwali and we all get a solid reason to force the men in the house
to do their bit of cleaning. Every possible nook and corner is searched for a
spider web, every shelf is dusted clean and the glass of all windows and doors
are scrubbed till they sparkle to welcome Goddess Lakshmi.
Now that the houses are clean, we all
try doing our best when it comes to Diwali decorations. In this post I will
give you a few ideas that you can use to give your house a special touch this
festive season. I am sure a lot of you must already be doing these things, but
for those who are still confused, take a cue.
Candles and Diyas: Candles and diyas are synonymous
with Diwali decorations. Lighten up your house with these. There are a lot of
ways in which candles and diyas can be used. You can use floating candles in a
vase filled with water and flowers. Candles can be put in wine glasses and be
used as a centrepiece along with some flowers. They can be placed around the floor
decorations or can be placed in tealight holders hanging from the ceiling.

Rangoli: I feel most women wait for Diwali to
display their talent when it comes to floor art. Rangoli is an Indian folk art
form and almost every house is adorned with atleast one such colourful piece of
art. It can be made with readily available rangoli colours or fresh flower
petals or even coloured rice. If you feel you are bad at it, do not fret, there
are stencils available in the market. Also there are stickers for the same, but
I personally love the ones that are hand drawn irrespective of how kiddish they
look.

Bangles: Bangles are not just an amazing
accessory but also a great item to decorate your house. You can hang a bunch of
them from the ceiling or tie one bangle to the other making a string or a
garland which can be hung on the wall or from the ceiling. You can also place
them in a shallow clay platter and place a candle in the centre to create a
centrepiece.

Dupattas/Sarees: While we dump or give away the pairs
of our old salwar kameez, we end up saving the dupattas. Diwali is the perfect
occasion to put these to use. You can you these around the railings or create a
cozy corner with different coloured dupattas and sarees hung from a rod. Bandhni
dupattas and sarees look great for a happy festival like this one.

Bells: Strings of bells or ghungroo
would make a pretty decoration idea too. They don’t just look pretty but sound
good too when the breeze brushes against them.

Mirrors and Beads: Mirrors in various shapes and with
different frames have always ornamented our home’s walls. You can use strings
or garlands made of small mirror pieces and beads and hang them at various places.

Handmade cloth/paper
garlands: There
are various garlands available at the handicraft shops with stuffed colourful
birds and animals sewn in one line. However you can make your own garlands;
just cut scrapbook paper in various colours into a particular shape and tie them
together with a string. Not restricting yourself to the animal and bird
cutouts, you can explore shapes of crackers and sweets to make these garlands. You
can hang these garlands vertically or horizontally as per your liking.

Earthen/Clay pots: Hand painted earthen/clay pots is a
wonderful way to deck up your place for Diwali. You can place them at the
entrance or create a corner using them. If you are falling short on time you
can always buy a few from the roadside vendors.

Flowers: Last but not the least, fresh
flowers. On the floor as rangoli or floating in the water in a vessel or simply
hanging around, fresh flowers never go out of vogue no matter what the occasion
is. So use your favourite flowers to make your home a prettier place this Diwali.
